HR springs for E35 M5 3,8 running 18" 275/35s at back and 245/40 at front

I am thinking of playing with the chassis a bit - and wondered if anyone is running HR springs ( i think they lower the ride height by 15mm (but not sure)

1/ Is it possible to have this set up?
2/ Anyone out there running 18 265/35's at the back with HR springs without any problems?

Again any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jahangeer.
I have an M5 1989 running on lowererd chassis and 18" rims.
The rims are BMW original from an M5 1995.
Tires are Goodyear Eagle 235/40-18 in front and 275/35-18 in back.
After mounting the new tires i experiensed som problems with the raer tires slightly toutching the outeredge of the fender.
I had the problem solved by having the fenderedges rolled out a little bit by IDH Gummi.
It works great!
If yuo run 265:s on rims with the original offset you should have no problem at all.(I previusly had it on my car.)
Jahangeer
Great problem solved then - where are IDH Gummi based do you have a tel number? Just in case I decide to go for the 275s still.

I think I can fit 265s on my original BMW E39 M5 wheels, they are 10s at the back and fit 235 on the front on the 8's. Not sure though.

Trackfreak - many thanks for the reply!

Hi Trackfreak

I am going to go to IDH Gummi on Wed 15th for a widening and install of HR springs. Really looking fwd to seeing the difference in handling! Already had the M5 Touring sway bar put in the back, and am waiting for the front from Vererra Road and Sport.

Looks like it will be an all day job, so will have to amuse myself in Östermalm.

I have 19"x 10" rims with 265/30 in the back on my M5 E34 and H&R springs. There is no problems at all.

Do you still have the automatic levelling devise, (standard on all M5 E34) you wont notice any differense in the ride hight in the rear at all with H&R springs if you dont adjuste the levelling device. But the adjustment level to lower is very smal on the M5, onely ca 10 mm. You can read more about my troubels with the leveling devise here Länk

Here are som pics of my car with H&R springs and 19" wheels Länk

It would be great to look at your car when you are in Stockholm!

i hope yuo will be as satisfied as i am with the work they do at IDH.They rolled my fenders about 12-13mm on each side.
You cant tell from the outside, but now i can fit a finger between the tire and the fender.M-femman is right about the nivomat sytem.I have disconnected the leveling system and am now running Bilstein Sportsuspension on all 4 corners.
But i still had to adjust the controlarm on the nivomat to ensure that the valve that regulates the level on the car still thinks that the level is ok.If you dont, the valve might make a terrible noice and try to up the pressure to the rear shocks.

I have wrote you a private message with my contact details on.

Do IDH know how to adjust the Self levelling system? Where is the controllarm located and is it an easy job to do? I am keeping the EDC shocks, do I still need to do this adjustment?

IDH said they would need to do a 4 wheel alignement - does this involve adjusting the self levelling?

Again many thanks for the help huys.

PS both of you have impeccable written English.

J
Jahangeer:

I doubt that IDH know how to adjust the self levelling.

Its easy to adjus the arm, its located on the rear swaybar on the driver side. Losen the two M6 nuts (10 mm) and adjuste by turning the arm in the sway bar. The engine has to run and the wheels have to be on the ground. Her is some pics and a german text how to do it. Länk

If you want to lower the car more then 5-10 mm do you have to modify the controlarm, only the adjusting in not enough.

How much do IDS charge? I payed 600:-.

Ps Do not forget to by oil!

You must adjust the control arm to have any effect with the HR springs.
It is located on the right rear A-arm.
Adjusting it is no problem, the trick is to adjust it to the right rideheight. The owner of IDH is a former M5 e34 owner,so maybe he knows about this.
Jahangeer: I just checked my mail, I call you later!

What amount do I need to adjust it the Rear HR springs will lower by 10mm. Does this mean I have to adjust the SL 10mm too?

J
Tracfreak:

You can only lower the M5 5-10 mm with the levelling device (or 20 mm up) from the original rideheight without a longer controlarm.

Jahangeer:

The H&R springs are much harder then the old used springs so ther dont lower so much.

If you dont adjust, the self levelling will compensate the lower springs to remain the orginal rideheight!

You are probebly right.
I lower my 525 touring a bit more by adjusting the autolevel but that car is equipped with a Schnitzer sport suspension.

IDH are charging 700kr for the widening of the wheel arches, and 400 for installing the springs and wheel alignement and then 4400 for the HR springs.

What oil do I need to buy?

"If you want to lower the car more then 5-10 mm do you have to modify the controlarm, only the adjusting in not enough"

I looked at the German link, thanks -good photos but dont really understand German. What do you mean by "modifying" the controll arm?

Sorry to drag this on guys!

regards

J
Jahangeer:

If you make the arm( about 2cm )longer, the regulator valve can move longer and lower the car more :)

Look at this picture Länk

You make a small rectangular metal plate, about 2,5 cm long with two, 6mm holes in and mount it between part 1 and 2 in the pic.

To adjuste you losen the nuts (no 4 in the pic) so you can rotate the lever (part no 2 in the pic) on the sway bar. To lover the car tur it clockvise (in the angle of the pic) and tighten the nuts again, it is easy! If you want i can help you before you go to IDS.

I have the H&R (lowering the M% with 30/15 something) springs in a combination with Bilstein Sprint chocks and this setup is stiff as hell! If you do not like anny comfort what so ever I would recomend it, outerwise not.

Well I went to Stockholm drove at lightning speed. Spent the night at Mfemmans - went to IDH and what do they tell me?!?!?!?!

MY EDC shocks are leaking - and they cannot do the work!!

Just ordered two new front ones, and booked a time at BMW for them to put the springs and shocks in 6th July.
