Dear friends I recently saw that the oil for my servo pump is ATF and not CHL. That might explain the moaning sound that i get in the mornings when i try to turn the steering wheel when the oil is still cold. I have spoken with my closest BMW service and they told me that i should change the oil and the sound will stop. I asked them if there will be leackage problems by changing the oil from red ATF to green CHF and they told me that it shouldnt be any problem and they also told me that i should use FHL insted of CHL. Is that true? *How easy or dificult is to take away the 100% of the old servo oil out of the system? *Can anyone answer to my questions and help with simple instructions of the proceedures to fallow so i can change the servo oil? The car is an '88 535 e34 with manual gearbox. If you have any sugestions of what oil i should finaly use, you are very welcome to do them. thank you. | |

You´ll have to open the servo container where you check the oil level and then pull out one hose somewhere way down connected to the steering, and then rotate the steering wheel back and forth a couple of times. Then, put back the hose and fill up and steer back and forth and fill again until the level doesn´t drop anymore |

Maybe not 100% but close enough! Use the FHL if BMW recomended it. |

| Is it wrong to start the engine so the pump spits all the servo oil? And after that fill it in with new? | |

Robert what if i disconect the hose that is on the top of the servo oil tank and put it in a botle, start the engine and let the old ol drain in the botle and fill the tank with the new oil.. Do you think this will work better for the removal of all the old oil? About the type of oil that i should use, everybody seems to have theyr own opinion and all of them make sence. Some people say that i should use the same type of oil that´already exists in the system, and that is ATF red oil. the reason they say is that since i dont have any leacks and no seriouse problems it is better to continue with ATF. Some others say that i should change it with the one recomended from BMW service. The problem is that i have contacted 2 BMW official services here in sweden and both of them had diferent opinions. One told me that i should use LHF!!!!!! even though i told them that there is a sticker on the top of it that says CHF. The other BMW service told me that i should use the oil that is writen and recomended from this sticker , BUT they didnt guaranty that i will have no problems with leacks after doing that. Theyr exact words were that they dont think so that will be a problem but then who knows. My problem is that i dont know up to what lever those 3 kinds of oil are compatible CHF LHF and ATF. I dont want to make my my servo system chemic lab. So far i am mostly thinking of using the ATF oil that was there before and get use to the noise that comes from the power steering when this ia cold. Any more ideas ? |
