"The Touring roof rails are useful but not as sporty to some. Also, removing them might get you an MPG or two on the high way. BMW sells a "Roof Railing Delete Kit" to replace the existing roof trim but it is pricey and hard to find locally so you get nailed on freight shipping. I can't say I know the correct part number either. The advantage of the delete kit is it has little flaps like the sedans to allows access to mounting points for the sedan style roof accessories. Also, it typically comes in just primer and requires painting. I found a decent work around using some good old electrical tape (my car has black trim)

The roof rails are help on by 6 Torx T40 bolts. Torx bits for screw driver or socket set are very useful for everything BMW you might do. The bolts are behind the legs of the roof rails.

When you remove the rails you will see metal brackets that attach them to the roof. Those have 2 bolts each(I am not sure if they are also T40 or other), but if I remember correctly the bolts are hidden under the gutter trim piece. You can simply pull the gutter trim up and it will snap out of these little plastic holders allowing you access to the bolts. You might loose/break a few of these brackets but just try to be a bit careful here.

Once I got the brackets off, I coated the bracket bolts with a little anti-seize compound and put them back into the roof to protect it from water getting in.

You will note there are some other holes in there. IF you had the Euro roof rail delete it, there would be a little flap so you could access those holes and mount the sedan style roof rack. (The touring roof accessories attach to the rails we just removed) If you are really interested in still carrying ski's and bikes then the Delete kit might be worth it. It is pricey though and hard to find at the dealer so shipping is nasty.

Instead I just refitted my gutter trim. Be careful you have lined up the little snap-ins that hold the trim and make sure it is lines up with the windshield. Easy to break the snap-ins if you dont line them up properly. There will be these odd gaps in the trim where your roof rails used to attach. To further protect from water and improve looks I cleaned the area, then simply took some black electrical tape, cut it to length, and taped over the gaps. It looks surprisingly good and has held up very well for over a year and a few car washings."
