Fram = 235/50-18.
Bak = 255/45-18.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5.

Har även sänkt bilen, men tycker fortfarande att det är riktigt bra komfort.

Hej,

Can I take it in English? (I can understand some Swedish)

I am waiting for my X3 2.0D (new engine) and need to choose Winter tyres.
Looking around on the web it lokos like that "dubbad däck" are a better choice due to the high torque at low RPM of the engine. However, "Dubbfria däck" may do fine on such 4x4 vehicle.

Regarding the dubbad däck it seems that the Hakkapeliitta SUV 5 are the best choice.

Still, when it comes to Winter tyres rules, it looks like that narrower tyre perfom better than wider ones. So I wonder if the X3 235/55 R17 are also the correct ize for Winter

Mvh,
Giorgio.

Hi Giodom!

Narrower tyres are beneficial for crusing the winter slush.
I belive 215 is the narrowest width you can use according to my manual.

Knowing this I went for the 235:s anyway...
Hakka is an excelten choise.
Read the tyretests at www.automotorsport.se

My personal reflection is that Dubbfria is good enough when
the tires are new but quickly loose winter performance when they wear down.

So to keep my new dubbfria WR G2 i will change to summer tires early in the spring to keep wear and tear down...

Hello theburste!!

Thanks for the tips!

Have you seen the tyretest from Vi Bilägare (25 September 2007) "Test åtta dubbdäck i tio ronder" (can dowload from their website).

It looks interesting the Gislaved NordFrost 5

The only problem with these test from the car magazine is that they always perform tests with normal cars. I am sure that a test with 4x4 SUVs would give different results.

Giorgio.

Hi!
I have since February 2005 run about 26000km on the wintertyres I boughts to my former X3 2.0d. They were original wheels boughts together with the cars, style 110 Länk with Continental Winter Contact. They now have approximately 4.5-5 mm left on the thread for this season and approximately 8mm is a new tyre. The worn tyre h
The BMW-dealer made a good price on these wheels as the negoatiation was tough for him:)
Regarding spike wheels there are many notes i todays news that they tear up up to 40 times more dust than friction tyres. Länk Länk
And there are sozens more if you use a searchengine, you find what reasurchers have defined the last 10 years or so.

I have run over 15 years on roads all over Europe, mostly in Sweden. Upper limit is the Sundsvall-Östersund region. Maybe up to 50.000km a year and 95% of these km have been on non-spike tyres.

Everyone choose of their own prefference. I recommend friction tyres and in combination with driving a bit carefully when its snow storm and ice on the roads. This for our future kind sake. Its their environment we as adults can plant one little change in our chooises made. But noone has done wrong, if they do not have asset to all information that now is displayed.

Good luck!

Good info Asken!!

Maybe we should have been discussing this under "Vilka vinterdäck dimensioner till X3? ", anyway we are now on in here.

----------------------------- not X3 related --------------------------------------
I remember when I had a 530D -00 (quite heavy car) with M-Sport kit, I had the friction Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2 tyres. In that time I lived in Czech rep. and drove a lot in Germany on the "beloved" Autobahn during two Winter periods in icy conditions, visible ice, at -5/-9 and kept quite sustained speeds in straight and shallow curved runs at around 120kph, top 140kph (as I was following the traffic at these speeds), and I was impressed of the stability. Remarkable! Traction control worked during lane changes, as there was accumulated snow in between. ABS worked intensively during braking.

With same car drove a lot on the Alps with heavy snow and temperature below -10 deg.C and had no problem at all in steep ascending or descending tracts (saw Mercedes, VWs, and other forward traction cars mounting chains).

During the same periods I had a chance to test M3s on a circuit at minus temperatures (no visible ice this time), still with friction tyres and also this time the results excellent.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, coming back to my X3 (hope to get it in time before November) I would like to investigate more on studded tyres as I will be driving (work reasons) a lot in Norway (Buskerud and Telemark areas), before I'll narrow the focus on friction tyres.

Brief conclusion after having downloaded all Vinterdäck tests files from both Vi Bilägare and Auto Motor &(und) Sport magazines, even older tests, it looks like as follows:

-Considering to drive the car in areas between Stockholm & Göteborg and South of Norway (E18/E20) and often Norway to Småland (E6/E4). But mostly, daily, on Norway's mountainous areas E134 (hopeless Norwegian roads, they have a lot to learn from Sweden)-

Dubbdäck:

- Gislaved Nord Frost 5 (beacuse of good handling on wet and dry)

- Continental ContiWinterViking 2 (same as above)

- Michelin X-Ice North

- Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 (this would have been a 1st choice if driving mostly up North, with a longer Winter season, but not a good choice for an all around Winter tyre because of worst breaking performance on wet and dry roads).

Friktionsdäck:

- Gislaved Soft Frost 2

- Continetal ContiViking Contact 3

- Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi

Now when it comes to SUV or 4x4 vehicles, I have not seen a test of the following interesting tyres:

- Nokian Hakkapeliita SUV 5 (it seems a reinforced version of the Hakkapeliita 5)

- Conti4x4WinterContact (dubbfritt)

- Conti 4x4 Ice Contact (dubbad)

- Michelin Altitute Alpin HP (dubbfritt) This was tested by Auto Motor and Sport in the past but they only run tests on snow and not on ice! (Test: H-däck för vintern)

- Grandtrek WTM3 / SP Winter Sport M3

- Grandtrek WT M2/SP Winter Sport M2

- SP Winter Sport 3D

If anyone can give more feedback it would be nice. Thanks for the coopration.

Mvh,

My background to my descission of choosing a set of factorydelivered spike free winter tyres:

Time saving! I wanted to do other things than checking tyres 10-20 hrs myself.

The factory have many people empolyed to verify what they sell. Some reason for that I didnt need to "invent the wheel" again: BMW also has a test facility up in the High North of Sweden, I assume they also test tyres there. Also if I was not happy after a while there is such a thing as warranty claim.
I have had problems with summer RFT-wheels a few years before. They were after a few reclaims changed first to smaller RFT wheels and then to Non-RFT wheels at that time on that car that is not owned any more. The funny thing is that the current owner in Uppsala now sent me a letter with questions of what to choose for new tyres, non RFT as he was displeased with this. Small world:)

I further sent a letter to Dr Reithofer last month, it was read and Mr Kai Zöbelein BMW Konzernkommunikation und Politik responeded in a very kind and respectful way. This reply also came this last week. Smaller world...:)

After having driven spike free wheels for 10-15 yrs I have my opinion clear. If im not a good driver then I shall not drive wheels that makes me tear up asphalt and dust into the air. Spikes tear up asphalt and are also wear down the metallspikes itself, slowly slowly. This is my contribution to the future environment for young ppl. Next time I buy new wheels, new information have appeared. I consider this. Spikes were originally used for ice-racing. Then came evolution:) Så enkelt var det.

On the other side, ppl living up north since many many years are used to long roads, though winters, many animals on the roads and "free highway". Another scene, other habits, other values and traditions. Their chooises I respect. And kindly ask them to consider new information discovered.

There is something called "kulturkrockar" than can happened. An Example. You GIODOM are like me used to spike free wheels since a good while back. But you are not born in Sweden, right? You move to another place to work. In the new place there are many different things compared to your background. You are interested to interact a a visitor in a new surrounding. You notice the differences, and have questions. In my world there are no stupid questions I used to say. Now I revise this. Questions create confusions, aswell as answers.

I made it simple in a negotiation with the salesperson at BMW at the purchase of the X3 regarding price of winter wheels. A good earning on the car and less earning on wintertyres was their result. If not one can always cancel the order of the car. It costs less than taking the value drop of the first year. Så enkelt var det:) Try asking kindly as they can get the turnover, nice added value...

The advantage it shown above. If problems appear: one point to adress everything that is not 103% perfection. And also their resposibility to solve it.
Then it takes time to solve problems. One describes them, leaves it for the other party to solve it. Then checks up what was delivered. Returns again if not pleased.

The dealership had in my case a somewhat "non-mainstream" customer but in the end a happy customer. On the same time the customer realises that time is what is needed for all parties involved should smile. BMW is smily wheels:) With a nice discount added a smily driver.

How many percent of all winter drivning will be on extremy slippery roads?

The swedish police use spike wheels. In that reason I can understand it in one way, having to get to a crime scene quickly. On the same time they drive FWD and in some cases even AWD.

AWD gets access to better grip when starting and accelerating. When it comes to breaking and decelleration, its in the end the drivers responsibility to adapt the speed to local conditions. Not everyone can drive the Santas sleigh´:)

I finally got the X3 10 days ago. The original factory tires are the Pirelli Scorpion M+S. Strange, a car delivered in a Nordic country should have been equipped with another tire.

As a conclusion I have chosen the studless type Continental SUV ContiWinterContact 17". it will be interesting to test them during the coming winter.

P.S.: By the way I got a nice price and service from Gnosjö Bil & Fritid, in Gnosjö. Länk (I got a tip from a friend living in Småland). Fredrik Nordfors, the shop owner, and the guys there are a professional team and very helpful. I also bought the aluminium wheels from them.
The price was better than the usual shops on the web. Next year I will also buy the summer tires over there. I'll go back there in December to do the "lackskydd", it cost half price than the main brands, but the same product
