Hi. about a year ago i bought this M535iA from sweden and then i started my project to make it my summercar..

it was painted and everything was done so it look sweet.. Länk

i took the car out of garage ad everything was fine like 2 weeks and my automatic transsimition "broke"..

it works only with 3rd gear so it is in somekind of safety mode? in the instrument panel one icon turns on when i start the car..(manual says it's number 16 and it's got somethink to do with the transsimition. sometimes it's off and everything is fine and all the gears work. i think it works mechanically well but could it be somekind of electrical problem?

tryed to check under the car and all the wires were getting in at one point.. would it be possible that there could be broken wires or something?

forgive my bad english. and forgive that i can't write alot in sweden :D

When trobleshooting an automatic transmission, you shall always start with adressing the lubrication/hydraulic system. What I mean is:

- what is the fluid level with warm transmission?
- how does the fluid look, bright red or dark, almost brown?
- how does the fluid smell, almost nothing or is it smelling terrible?

If the fluid level is erratic, the oil overheated (dark and smelling), or if the filter screen is clogged, then the transmission can fail constantly or sporadically.
Often a change of fluid, filter screen, sump gasket and o-ring does wonders for a automatic transmission. I am pretty sure that the gearbox in question is a ZF4HP22. Up to 1986, these gearboxes are sensitive to reving high in N or P, so be careful. If you have such a gearbox and rev it in the aforementioned gears, then you risk burning the A-clutch. If so, a complete overhaul is probably necessary.
